This week is all about creativity, the concept of being creative, and what this means to each of us as individuals, business owners & operators. Yesterday, we tried to define what being creative means, and how important it is, to those within the digital marketing world. Creativity must be necessary, as an entire segment of our service offerings falls under the “Creative Services” banner. We are required daily to take our clients’ visions & ideas from conceptualization, through the design process, and have them prepared for implementation upon receiving the clients’ approval to proceed. We know this is something we do quite well. Otherwise, how did we develop from being just another internet marketing agency start-up, into one of the best digital marketing agencies in the Philadelphia & Central Jersey region, in little more than a decade?

With our daily ego-stroking now done – where were we? Many businesses require creativity to one degree or another. Still, it can be argued that no industry has achieved more through the application of creative thinking than the Home Services Industry. Home Services Professionals are regularly tasked with completing a project that requires some proficiency in creativity. Murphy’s Law, as it applies to Contractors, seems to be that no matter how prepared one believes themselves to be, it is all-but-inevitable that the one part or tool needed to complete the step you are on right now is nowhere to be found.

At this moment of realization, some might spend the time cursing their bad luck or allow the project almost completed to come to a grinding halt. But not you, Home Service Professional: You simply take a moment to pay homage to the Patron Saint of Creativity: Saint MacGyver. MacGyver was able to diffuse a nuclear bomb using nothing more than a paperclip, the guts from a ball-point pen, and maybe some used chewing gum. Like MacGyver, you consistently figure out a way to get the job done, utilizing nothing more than the tools & materials at your disposal. Furthermore, you more often than not accomplish this without sacrificing one shred of quality or reliability. The end result of your application of creativity looks & functions as it should, and seldom will anyone realize that you once again made the nearly impossible, possible. Thank you, St. MacGyver!

Most of us could never complete half of our daily responsibilities if we didn’t apply some degree of creativity to the task at hand. Unfortunately, too many Home Services Professionals correlate their ability to “MacGyver” on the job as applicable to every aspect of their business operations, including taking sole responsibility for their own creative marketing. We likely would make a mess of things if we tried to “MacGyver” our way through one of your projects. With that in mind, we find the responsible thing to do is to politely inform you that being successful with creative marketing is slightly more complicated than many realize. We may not risk bodily injury or property damage if we do something incorrectly. Still, the risk of injury & damage to your business from making some errors in judgment with your digital marketing can often hurt to a similar level.

Many of the tasks performed on your projects are “best left to the professionals.” That rule also applies to digital & creative marketing efforts. We respect & understand that many of you wish to spearhead your own creative marketing strategies & campaigns. We are powerless to stop you. But, we feel it our responsibility to point out some of the mistakes being made when D.I.Y.’ing your digital marketing for home services. As such, we wish to share our Top 3 Creative Marketing Mistakes Made By Home Services Professionals.

Are You Being “Fresh?” I Hope SO: Like kids who get bored with the same old stuff, the digital world gets tired of the same content. Being called “Fresh” might have been a bad thing when growing up, but the search engines and bots used by Google & others look for the new content, and scorn the old content. Mix up the types of postings you use. Combine video content with blogs, related news articles, and other formats, as long as it is relevant to your business and potential customers.

HELLO – Is This Thing On? Failing to properly engage your target audience will yield a result much like what a stand-up comedian hears after failing to deliver a strong punchline: crickets. Put yourself in your potential customers’ shoes for a moment, and think: “Would this (content) make or keep my attention and interest?” If your answer is no, so likely will be the answer given by your target audience.

Hopefully, you’re not making these mistakes with the creative marketing for your Home Services business. If you are, we hope that you won’t be for much longer!
