As a part of The Lion’s Den Pride, following our podcast over the past year, you’ve heard from many home services professionals such as Brad Casebier of Radiant Plumbing & Air Conditioning, the Magnolia family, and countless others in the HVAC community who attribute much of their companies’ growth and success to the Nexstar Network, an organization responsible for the second-to-none coaching of over 800 businesses across the nation in the home services space.
Much like the professional journeys of many of these guests, Nexstar Network’s new President and CEO, Julian Scadden, followed an unorthodox avenue through the trades to wind up at the helm of one of the nation’s leading home services training companies.
Please tune in to the latest episode of The Lion’s Den Podcast, where 1SEO’s Bill Rossell took over the Den for a no-holds-barred conversation with Scadden to hear how he clawed to the top of the Nexstar empire after living as a homeless high school dropout.
Whether you’re an owner of an established home services company, a field technician, or aspiring to enter the trades, this podcast offers the expert insight and motivation you need to transform the way you approach both your personal and professional lives.
Failing to fit the traditional mold expected by the American educational system, the 16-year-old Julian Scadden dropped out of high school and was enduring the harsh realities of homelessness when an opportunity presented itself: Ditch Digging. Taken under the wing of a local home services company, Julian got his first real taste of the trades, developing his passion for plumbing, teamwork, and self-discipline.
After the unexpected acquisition of his employer by a national brand, Julian had proven his worth and found himself promoted to service manager, where he stayed, sharpening his skill set. That was until the profits-over-people culture that developed no longer aligned with where Scadden’s sights were set within the industry, and he opted to take an opportunity with a new organization.
In his new role, Julian was first immersed into the world of Nexstar, unbeknownst to him, where he would one day sit in the captain’s chair of the entire organization. Following a few Nexstar training events and moving across the country to Georgia, Scadden brought his new mindset and mission to a startup construction company in Atlanta. What he also carried was a blossoming relationship with Jack Tester, the first employee, and CEO of Nexstar. Tester soon became Julian’s mentor, and ultimately his predecessor as the President of Nexstar.
Before too long, Julian’s family was on the move again, relocating to St. Paul, Minnesota, where Scadden joined the ranks of Nexstar’s elite coaching staff, climbing the training team’s ladder throughout the years and landing himself the role as Vice President until the announcement of Tester’s retirement in 2020. An obvious choice for the job, Scadden was then promoted to CEO & President – the opportunity of a lifetime.
What’s unique to Nexstar’s approach to scaling and improving its members’ organizations is the fact that Nexstar is 100% member-owned. The sole motivation of Nexstar is to provide each of its members with the tools, training, and resources they subjectively need to find success within the home services space.
Understanding that when you genuinely develop the people, the profits will surely come, Nexstar has grown, improved, and thrived since Tester’s vision became a reality in 1992.
