Beginning last Friday, an unprecedented global cyberattack went viral, infecting at least 230,000 networks in 150 countries with “Wanna Decryptor” malware, and demanding ransom payments from its victims. At this point, no one has claimed responsibility for the attack.
Hospitals, schools, companies, government agencies and other organizations from around the world, stirring chaos, shutting down hospital systems, manufacturing plants, transport networks and universities. The “WanaCrypt0r 2.0” ransom has been detected in 150 countries with Russia, Ukraine and Taiwan as primary targets.
The malicious software locks a computer system and all its data, preventing users from gaining access unless money is forwarded to hackers. It’s believed to be the biggest online extortion attack ever recorded. Some experts claim that it was inspired by a National Security Agency tool kit that had been leaked last year.
The malware typically spreads through email phishing programs. It works by exploiting a known bug in Microsoft Windows’ operating system. So, if you haven’t updated your Windows PC recently, make sure you do so as soon as possible.
Although it isn’t considered a “sophisticated” attack, the malware acts like a worm by discovering security holes in computers and wriggling its way throughout entire networks.
Microsoft has put out an emergency patch for windows, which is even available for computers running older operating systems including Windows XP, Windows 8 and Windows Server 2003.
This is not the first time ransomware had been used. Last year, Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center paid over $17,000 after taking a hit from a ransomware attack. Although Friday’s demand is apparently $300 of digital currency Bitcoin, which is rather low, experts warn that the threat should not be taken lightly.
Ransomware generally targets those networks without strong security systems in place, including small and mid-sized companies.
Most smaller organizations don’t initially recognize the benefits of hiring the required IT security experts, systems and technology to defend against security attacks. This leaves many businesses largely unprotected and unsecured.
